Navigating Georgia Rule 111-8-63-.20(9): Medication Record Requirements

Written by Olivia Cash | Oct 16, 2024

In Georgia, assisted living facilities are required to follow strict standards for documenting medication administration. As outlined by the Department of Community Health in Rule 111-8-63-.20(9), these standards are crucial for resident safety and regulatory compliance. Here, we outline the key elements of this regulation and how operators can effectively meet these requirements.

Key Provisions of Georgia Rule 111-8-63-.20(9)

Facilities must maintain a thorough and up-to-date Medication Administration Record (MAR) for each resident, including:

  1. Resident Identification: Full name, date of birth, any known allergies, name, and telephone number of the resident's health care provider.

  2. Medication Information: Name, dosage, route, frequency, specific directions, key side effects, and adverse reactions for use of each medication.

  3. Administration Timing: Exact time and date of each administration, refusal, or if a medication error is identified.

  4. Administrator’s Credentials: Name and initials of the person administering the medication.

These requirements are designed to ensure accurate medication administration and enhance overall care quality.

Implications for Assisted Living Operators

For operators, adhering to these documentation standards is critical. Failure to maintain accurate records can result in penalties, legal issues, and, most importantly, risks to resident safety. Therefore, precise and reliable medication documentation is essential.

ECP’s Medication Administration Record (MAR) system helps facilities meet these requirements efficiently. It streamlines medication administration, reduces errors, and integrates with over 650 pharmacies for seamless updates. The system also centralizes communication with pharmacies, verifies medication details, documents administration, and customizes reorder settings. By using ECP’s eMAR, facilities can ensure high standards of care while meeting Georgia's regulatory requirements effectively.
